The 1786 earthquake-triggered landslide dam and subsequent dam-break flood on the Dadu river, southwestern China

چکیده
Forensic studies of past hydraulic structure failures are rare despite their critical relevance to modern hydraulic design, and the writers (Dai et al., 2005) must be congratulated for their outstanding study. Herein the discussion is focused on two aspects of the conclusion. It is believed that dam overtopping was the primary cause of the Dadu river landslide dam failure, although aftershocks may have further weakened the embankment. Using physically based equations supported by recent physical model data, the maximum outflow may be estimated to be about 6000 m/s. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Experimental Research on the Dam-Break Mechanisms of the Jiadanwan Landslide Dam Triggered by the Wenchuan Earthquake in China
Dam breaks of landslide dams are always accompanied by large numbers of casualties, a large loss of property, and negative influences on the downstream ecology and environment. This study uses the Jiadanwan landslide dam, created by the Wenchuan earthquake, as a case study example. Several laboratory experiments are carried out to analyse the dam-break mechanism of the landslide dam. The differ...
متن کاملA Mathematical Model for Forecasting the Dam-Break Flood Routing Process of a Landslide Dam
Once a landslide dam bursts, its reservoir discharges quickly in a flood which will cause catastrophic damage to life and property downstream. For a specific landslide dam, the peak flow rate and the evolution of downstream flood are influenced by the shape and size of the dike breach when dam-break occurs. According to the general nature of landslide dams and field observations of dike-breach ...
متن کاملCharacteristics and classification of landslide dams associated with the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake
Background: Strong earthquakes are among the prime triggering factors of landslides, which may block rivers, forming landslide dams. Some of these dams may pose serious threats to people and property due to upstream inundation and downstream dam-breach flooding. Evaluating the stability and potential hazard of landslide dams is significant for the mitigation measures, but remains challenging. T...
متن کاملLandslide dams triggered by the Wenchuan Earthquake, Sichuan Province, south west China
At 14:28 (Beijing time) on 12 May 2008, the catastrophic Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake occurred just west of the Sichuan basin, China, causing severe damage and numerous casualties. It also triggered a large number of landslides, rock avalanches, debris flows etc. Some of the landslides formed natural dams in the rivers, with the potential secondary hazard of subsequent flooding. Through the inter...
متن کاملNumerical investigation of variable uplift distribution at the level of landslide-induced acceleration at the concrete dam body crack position
The study of seismic behavior of concrete dams has been considered by many researchers due to the importance of dam safety during earthquakes. Because the destruction of these structures by earthquakes can have adverse economic and social effects. On the other hand, predicting the behavior of concrete dams during an earthquake is one of the most complex and difficult issues in structural dynami...
